What are Whey Protein Hydrolysate or WPH?
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein or Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH) has a distinguishing feature, at a molecular level, with regard to the rest of the existing proteins: it is hydrolyzed, ie, it has been submitted to a hydrolisis or molecular segmentation process, resulting in a pre-digested protein with a high peptide concentration.
The manufacturing technique used in this case "imitates" the digestive process which would take place in our stomach if we were to ingest a solid protein source, or even whey.
Thanks to this advanced development a protein is obtained which has a number of benefits, including rapid assimilation. Is completely digestible by anyone and its nutritional composition enables the synthesis of proteins in the human body.
All proteins consist of chains of amino acids. These unions are formed from two or more amino acids and therefore possess: di or tri-peptides, or tetra or oligo-peptides.
Upon receiving protein from any source our digestive systems must proceed to break up or fracture these unions of acids of which they are composed. This is done through the secretion of enzymes, followed by an absorption phase and transportation to the tissues of the body via the blood flow.
The way in which our body absorbs proteins is in the form of peptides in the intestine, di and tri-peptides in particular.
It is for this reason that Hydrolysed Proteins are viewed as the most effective in terms of absorption because they ease the work of digestion considerably.
Types of Whey Protein Hydrolysate
WPH comes from protein sources originating from the hydrolysis process, for instance:
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Concentrate
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate
Hydrolyzed Casein Protein
Hydrolysation is a predigestion process, which varies in terms of the protein source. Hydrolysates originate from concentrates or isolates and have the same characteristics:
Percentage of protein
Amount of fat and lactose
Spectrum of protein fractions
The third point is the degree of hydrolysis, in other words the concentration of predigested peptides contained in the overall protein. The greater the degree of hydrolysis the higher will be the absorption rate.
Protein fractions in Hydrolyzed Proteins
When the source of protein which will subsequently obtain the hydrolate contains a high level of bioactive peptides or protein fractions, you can enjoy the benefits they bring.
A denatured protein is one that has been subjected to certain processes, such as ionic exchange and use of chemicals or to high temperatures that alter its molecular structure, thereby degrading the protein fractions.
The clearest choice will be to always opt for proteins which have not undergone such processing, which is the case with hydrolysed protein, a product known to fortify human health:
Strengthens the immune system
Has antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial properties
Improves the absorption and transportation of iron in the body
These protein fractions are:
Hydrolyzed Proteins and Protein Synthesis
Due to the rapid absorption of WPH, one can bring about a rapid rise of the total amino acids present in the bloodstream, which is known as hyperaminoacidemia, the main benefit of which is the stimulation of protein synthesis.
The WPH aminogram profile tends to be rich in EAAs (essential amino acids) and BCAAs (branched chain amino acids).
Complete proteins are those that provide the entire spectrum of amino acids, essential and non-essential, without any deficit therein, so that the body has the correct building material for tissue regeneration.
Among the BCAAs we find the amino acid L-Leucine, whose importance is its ability to stimulate protein synthesis by means of a metabolic pathway called mTOR.
The benefits of Whey Protein Hydrolysate
This ability is intrinsic in hydrolysed proteins, and perfectly aligns with the role of a pre or post-workout protein, without causing any upset stomach. It possess a quick gastric emptying property, thereby allowing the individual to consume successive meals more easily.
Another feature of certain WPHs, especially if they are made from Whey Protein Isolate, is that lactose intolerant people can benefit from them with no complications, ensuring optimal digestion and subsequent absorption of amino acids, thus avoiding allergen contraindications.
WPH allows us to flood our bloodstream with amino acids more quickly than any other source, thereby changing the state of catabolism to that of anabolism, which is also referred to as nitrogen balance. This process is favourable to the synthesis of proteins, since at that moment there will be a higher rate of complete amino acids compared to those which are degraded.
The prcesses of topping up of muscle energy, or refilling of glycogen can be performed by WPH, since it stimulates the elevation of insulin, but without causing any negative impact on health.
The ingestion of WPH brings about the translocation of GLUT4, the muscular glucose transporter, enhancing the delivery of insulin to the muscle cells and helping to avoid its accumulation in adipocyte fat.
Following on from the previous point, we can surmise that if our energy capacity is better (muscle energy support), our recovery will likewise be improved. Additionally, athletic performance and the effectiveness of each training session will be even more effective.
We must not forget that each training session produces an alteration in homeostasis and that although the organism has a number of resources it can use to return to its basal state (including nutrients) and with which to shorten the recovery periods, we should still take action ourselves so that we are in the best possible condition before our next planned sports session.
One of the protein fractions that is most abundant in WPH is glycomacropeptide, which has the ability to produce a greater degree of satiety. This is due to its effect on the regulation of ghrelin, a hormone involved in the physiological mechanisms of satiety, among others.
How and when to use Hydrolyzed Proteins?
Hydrolyzed Proteins can contribute to daily protein requirements, and given their particular properties, the most recommendable times to take them are:
On an empty stomach
What do Hydrolyzed Proteins combine well with?
In order to to avoid the loss of the properties acquired by the hydrolysation process to the maximum extent possible, one can mix or combine WPH with a carbohydrate, so as to slow down gastric emptying. The best option for that would be to ingest carbohydrates during the training or physical activity and then finalise it with a serving of WPH, or even take it pre-workout.
On the other hand, we can also combine WPH with elements that do not delay its absorption, for instance:
The raw ingredient for Evohydro raw is Optipep 90® Carbery, which has the following characteristics:
Rapid digestion and absorption
Excellent for post-exercise protein smoothies
High availability of amino acids with which to optimise protein synthesis and muscle growth
Improves performance thanks to its energy loading ability
Reduction of DOMS and improvement in recovery times
Evopept is also a Hydrolyzed Casein, also known as PeptoPro®. This type of WPH has a high degree of hydrolysis making it very favourable for use during pre or intra-workout. Given its composition and molecular structure, we recommend mixing it with cyclodextrins, as well as fortifying it with electrolytes. Thus we get:
