What is Krill Oil?

Krill oil is extracted from a tiny crustacean, very similar to a shrimp that is found in the cold waters of the Antarctic ocean and that constitutes a great part of the marine fauna. The resistant krill grows under the harsh ice of the Southern Pole, and it is regarded as a “key species”, since many predators depend on this organism. These semi-transparent crustaceans gather in a dense mass or hive that paints the surface of the sea with a pink or red color.

It is the basic element in the diet of many species since the population of this crustacean is quite high, among its predators we can find penguins, whales, fish, and other animals.

Whales are one of its main predators since they eat huge quantities of krill in order to get the necessary energy to feed their enormous body. A blue whale eats up to 3 tons of krill every day. Moreover, whales are not the only animals that depend on krill to meet their nutritional needs. The same happens with seals, penguins, sea birds, octopuses, and fish.

Krill makes up the most the biggest biomass on the world, along with plankton, it is one of the most easily reusable nutritional resources from the sea, an excellent source of nutrients from an environmental perspective.

The interest in Krill grows with each passing year, and it is regarded almost as a valuable treasure duet to its excellent nutritional benefits, like its great amount of Omega-3.

Omega-3 has properties for cardiovascular protection, favoring the increase of HDL or good cholesterol, and reducing the risk of suffering a cardiovascular disease.

Krill oil has multiple properties: it protects your heart, it has anti-inflammatory effects, it protects the blood vessels, relieves the symptoms of arthrosis, allergies, diabetes, and rheumatism.

People often wonder how krill oil can help to calm several pathologies like cardiovascular diseases, arthrosis, or the premenstrual syndrome. The answer is quite simple: krill oil is a very efficient anti-inflammatory element.

Krill oil combines three valuable vital substances:

  • Important Omega-3 anti-inflammatory elements
  • Active fatty cells, called phospholipids
  • Cell protection of the antioxidant elements

The experts agree that the complex interaction of these three vital ingredients is the source of all its the multiple benefits for health.

The Omega-3 from the Antarctica

This crustacean feeds the biggest fish and it is not contaminated by heavy metals nor other toxins that are harmful for health.

Intensive fishing of Krill is regulated, and only a small part of krill is captured each year. Their provision is almost unlimited because they reproduce very fast.

These crustaceans from the Southern Pole, which are quite similar to shrimps, live in huge sandbanks in the cold Antarctic sea ice.

The Amazing Krill Oil

Euphausia superba is a multicellular species with the greatest accumulation (biomass) on the earth. The estimated amount of krill in the Antarctic Ocean that surrounds the Antarctica is approximately between 135 and 670 million tons.

In the last years, the annual capture from commercial fishing in the Antarctic Ocean was from 102.000 to 110.000 tons, much less than the quotas imposed by the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). This ensures the preservation of the krill species in the Antarctic Ocean and the continuation of the manufacturing of its incredible oil in a foreseeable future.

Science is always trying to find new sustainable resources, and the fact that krill oil is available as a dietary supplement has no harmful effects on the ecological balance of the Antarctic Ocean, since the annual fishing represents only a 0.03% of the estimated krill populations.

Even the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and the CCAMLR (Convetion on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) confirm this statement, which means that krill ECOSAFE.

Everyone, from Russian to Japanese people, used science to try to find an affordable, new method to capture krill in the Antarctic Ocean to sell it as food. However, none of their methods was successful, since freezing and defrosting krill gives it a very short lifespan. This is how they came up with the idea of capturing the mollusks to use their therapeutic oil instead.

Scientists spent years doing research and trying to obtain oil from Antarctic krill without destroying its nutrients, but they always failed. However, this changed thanks to a patented process by Neptune Technologies & Bioressources.

A team of scientists spent five years trying to gather research and to find out how to obtain krill oil and keep its beneficial properties intact. Finally, a collaboration with the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, developed a unique extraction process that does not alter its properties, all thanks to science.

Krill oil, healthy by nature

This crustacean finds itself at the beginning of the food chain and it solely feeds from plankton plants which do not have heavy metals, pesticides, or other harmful substances.

Krill is one of the most numerous species on the Earth and it is the main source of food for many marine animals, specially whales and penguins.

The fact that krill oil is available as a dietary supplement does not impact the ecological balance in the Antarctic Ocean since the catch represents only a 0.03% of the estimated krill population each year.

Even the WWF (World Wide Fund) and the CCAMLR (Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) have confirmed this information.

If you suffer from the premenstrual syndrome, have high levels of low density lipoproteins, joint pain, or if you just want to stay healthy, krill oil will can help you out.

However, it is important to know the following information before you purchase and use krill oil.

What does Krill Oil contain?

It has a high concentration of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

You must have heard about the two fats that are found in Omega-3 Fatty Acids which are crucial for health: DHA EPA. These compounds are not only essential to maintain a good state of health. Science has pointed out that they are also capable of promoting cardiovascular health, reinforcing the immune system, and improving the state of mind.

KRILL OIL 500mg - 120 softgels
Omega-3 Fatty Acids source. With astaxanthin and phospholipids. Each capsule provides 77.5g of Omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids.

The consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids in proper amounts within a balanced diet helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases due to its ability to reduce LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, and to increase HDL or good cholesterol.[1]

Omega 3 Source

Several studies show how a diet that has a high Omega-3 content helps to increase the levels of adiponectin, which is a hormone with beneficial effects for metabolic processes. This is why Omega-3 can help to stabilize sugar in the blood. In short-term studies carried on humans, the higher the adiponectin levels are related to a lower risk of suffering type 2 diabetes.[2]

Essential Omega-3 fatty acids contribute to:

  • The growth and development of children
  • The maintenance of triglycerides levels in the blood
  • The maintenance of a normal blood pressure

Rich in antioxidants

Clinical tests have proven that it has impressive and powerful antioxidant effects that do not only provide an extraordinary benefit for health, but also keep it stable.

Its antioxidant elements avoid the “fish” flavor that it is so strong in other omega-3 oils. (Unsaturated fats tend to be highly susceptible to oxidation).

Krill oil has a high ORAC value

ORAC is a standard laboratory test that is used to assess the proportion of several antioxidants. The lower the amount, the lower its effects.

It has been proven that the antioxidants found in this oil have an incredible potential.

The antioxidant capacity of Krill has been tested trough ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) and the results were unexpectedly high, which means it has a greater antioxidant ability than other elements.

Unlike other known antioxidant oils, krill oil has a surprisingly high ORAC value: 378. This means that its antioxidant effect is 300 times higher than that of vitamin A or vitamin E, and 48 times higher than Omega-3 from conventional fish oils.

Rich in astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is one of the natural pigments known as xantophylls, a subcategory inside the carotenoid family. Carotenoids are phytochemicals (vegetable chemicals) produced by the plants (and some animals, too) as a survival mechanism. They belong to the beta-carotene family, and they are also rich in lutein and lycopene.

It has been proven that all these ingredients have properties to inhibit the aging process.

The plants use carotenoids for their natural antioxidant properties in order to protect themselves from the strong sun rays. Astaxanthin helps the body to neutralize the free radicals, which are harmful metabolic byproducts that damage the cells and tissues from the body.

New scientific evidence has repeatedly proven that antioxidants are a key element in order to encourage the health of the heart, they support the immune system and memory. The antioxidants also seem to play a role in helping to delay the signs of aging. However, even though there is a lot of food with antioxidants available, the poor quality of our diet does not always meet the necessary amounts of these beneficial elements that clean our body from the free radicals.

This is why it is advisable to consume antioxidants in order to optimize health.

A remarkable feature of carotenoids from krill oil, is that they are completely esterified, which means that they are chemically bound by EPA and DHA molecules.

This means that the body can benefit from its antioxidant properties. It also has the ability to enter the blood-brain barrier, which means that it protects and stimulates the brain at the same time.

This carotenoid found in krill oil offers an excellent protection from UV rays which delays the aging process.

Antarctic krill oil has a exceptionally high astaxanthin content when compared to other products. Apart from its beneficial properties for health, this also has an additional advantage, which is the fact that the oil is absolutely stable and it protects from oxidation.

New flavonoid

It has a new flavonoid (scientists call it “Sampalis”), a substance that is normally found in plants and which has a strong antioxidant effect.

It provides phospholipids

Phospholipids are the building blocks of cell membranes, they regulate the cell transport by working as ‘guardians’. They protect cell membranes from the free radicals attack. This unique relation between phospholipids and omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil makes it easier for fatty acids molecules to go through the intestine walls.

Another important feature from krill oil is that the most abundant phospholipid is phosphaditylcholine, which is partially made of choline. Several studies have proven the importance of choline to develop the brain, learning, and memory. In fact, choline is specially important for the development of the brain in the fetus and children, as well as for pregnant and lactating women. Choline is the precursor form of acetylcholine, an essential neurotransmitter (it sends nerve signals to the brain) and for trimethylglycine, a renowned liver protector.

Krill also has clear advantages over convential krill oils in a series of important aspects

Krill Oil's Raw Ingredient: Rimfrost Krill Oil

Krill oil comes from a small crustacean, similar to a shrimp, that can be found in the Antarctic waters and that makes up a large part of the aquatic population. It is the prey of several species such as penguins, whales, fish, and other animals.

This crustacean grows in the Antarctic ocean, away from the pollution produced by mankind. Krill is naturally rich phospholipids, Omega-3, and antioxidants.

Krill is an essential piece within the Antarctic ecosystem and RIMFROST takes additional measures in order to guarantee its balance. In order to collect it, they do not use abusive nor harmful fishing for the marine ecosystem.

Krill Oil Softgels

How do Rimfrost Krill Oil softgels work?

  • Omega-3 phospholipids from krill give less aftertaste and a decreased sensation of reflux when compared to many other sources of Omega-3.
  • Phospholipid-bound omega-3 have water-soluble abilities, allowing the lipids to more easily blend with the stomach content.
  • In water, phospholipids will arrange in a manner where the hydrophobic tails face inwards and the hydrophilic heads face the aqueous surroundings, creating small micelle-like fat droplets.
  • Triglycerides from fish oil (not krill oil) do not blend with water and because of this, fats from fish oil will gather on top of the aqueous stomach content and increase the risk of reflux and unpleasant aftertaste.

Characteristics of Rimfrost Krill Oil softgels

  • Lipid intactness: in krill, Omega-3 fatty acids are bound to phospholipids and primarily to phosphatidylcholine (PC). Degradation of PC to lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) in fresh krill is rapid due to naturally occurring enzymes in krill that catalyze the reaction. For this reason, krill needs to be processed immediately after catch to prevent degradation of PC. High relative PC content and low relative LPC content, as found in RIMFROST Krill oil, is a sign of gentle and immediate processed krill oil where lipid degradation is minimal thereby ensuring lipid intactness.
  • Phosphatidylethanolamine content: When Omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil oxidize and form peroxides, the peroxides can react with the amine group on either protein/peptide, forming hydrophilic pyrroles, or with phoshatudylethanolamine (PE), forming hydrophobic pyrroles. Low temperatures during processing will decrease the reaction between PE and the lipid oxidation products. High relative PE content, as found in RIMFROST Krill oil, is a sign of both low lipid degradation and low oxidation.
  • Brownish hue of the softgels: the main oxidation mechanisms for Omega-3 phospholipids in krill oil is the so-called non-enzymatic browning reaction. The degradation pathways from peroxides to pyrrolisation and Strecker degradation result in a brown colored compound. Low levels of brownish hue in krill oil, as found in RIMFROST Krill oil, is therefore a sign of low oxidation.
  • Astaxanthin content: Krill oil contains the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin, which protects the Omega-3 fatty acids from oxidation. When krill is exposed to air, astaxanthin starts to degrade at room temperature. At high temperatures, astanxantin levels decline more rapidly as this condition is more conducive to oxidation. RIMFROST Krill oil's high levels of naturally occurring astaxanthin is a sign of low oxidation.

Benefits and properties of Krill Oil

Among the properties and benefits from krill oil we highlight the most important ones that have been proven through clinical studies:

  • Cholesterol reduction

After using krill oil for just 12 weeks, cholesterol is generally reduced in a 13%, LDL in a 32%, triglycerides in a 11% and it increases HDL in more than 44%.

  • Premenstrual syndrome decrease

After using krill oil for 3 months: irritability decreases a 47%. Depression decreases in a 40%. Liquid retention decreases in a 37%. Abdominal pain decreases in a 33%.

  • Joint pain relief

After using krill oil after just a week, joint pain is reduced in a 24%, rigidity is reduced in a 22%, and flexibility increases in a 16%.

  • It has many more properties

It has a great potential to supply energy, tone the brain, protect the skin (sun protection from the inside), combat wrinkles, etc.

Krill oil vs Cholesterol

A second important study on the benefits of krill oil for human health focused on the effects of high amounts of lipids in the blood.

High lipid levels are a risk factor to suffer from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

In a study carried out by Canadian researchers from the University of Montreal, University of McGill, and the Medical Center of Riverview in Montreal, they studied the effects of krill oil on hyperlipidemia (which increases fat levels in the blood).

For 3 months, the researchers carefully examined the lipid levels, LDL and HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, in regard to krill oil treatment. The study was published in the medical journal “Alternative Medicine Review” in 2004 (Vol. 9, No. 4).

The study concluded that krill oil considerably reduces lipids and LDL triglycerides in the blood – while increasing HDL cholesterol levels, which is good.

What it cholesterol?

Even if you are thin and healthy, you can also have high lipids levels, which implies a series of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases.

Cholesterol is part of a lipids group (fat in the blood), which is essential to produce hormones, nerve fibers, and cell membranes.

However, it can become a problem if there is an excessive amount of them. Usually, the liver produces all the cholesterol that we need. If you eat food with a lot of cholesterol or saturated fats, the liver will respond by releasing even more cholesterol.

Over time, this excess accumulates in the arteries and they harden, forming the atherosclerotic plaque. If this problem is not solved, the organism can even develop atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, or a stroke.

Know your lipid levels in the blood

It is important to keep your lipids under control within a healthy rate.

Balance cholesterol levels in the blood

The optimum level of cholesterol should be under 200 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter). Moreover, we must also regard the two the two main subgroups of cholesterol, since if the value of low density lipoproteins or beta cholesterol (LDL), also called “bad” cholesterol, is lower than 100 mg/ dl ; the value of high density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol should be at 60 mg / dl.

(Lipoproteins are small fat and protein globules that help to transport fat to the cells throughout the body.)

Triglycerides, another important type of lipids, must be lower than 150 mg / dl. Triglycerides are formed from the most common fats in the diet (90% of the fat we consume) and they are the main energy source for the body. Each type of lipoprotein has different effects on health.

The higher your LDL levels (the protein that transports cholesterol in the blood), the higher the risk of suffering heart diseases.

On the other hand, high HDL levels reduce the risk of suffering cardiovascular diseases because it transports lipoproteins to the liver, where they are processed by the metabolism to be finally excreted.

High levels of triglycerides contribute to a thicker blood and they make people prone to suffer arterial thrombosis. In general, these high triglycerides levels are produced as a side effect of cholesterol and other risk factors for heart diseases like obesity.

Keeping optimal Low Density Lipoproteins levels

Nowadays, heart diseases and strokes are the most frequent cause of death in United States, Canada, and most of the western countries. High cholesterol levels are a very important risk factor to develop this kind of cardiovascular diseases.

The American Heart Association estimates that nearly 150 million people in the USA have a lipoprotein level of 240 mg /dl, which surpasses the limit (200 to 239 mg / dl).

As a result of a recent study, the government has been asked to take action regarding those people who are in the high-risk group (like those who have suffered a heart attack, for example), in order to adjust their levels to the standard recommendations.

Doctors have answered by prescribing more cholesterol reduction treatments that are mainly made of statins, which have proven to be effective in order to reduce LDL cholesterol.

In addition, the population is being told to follow healthy habits: like doing exercise regularly, maintaining a balanced weight, quit smoking, not undergoing stress, and the most important point, eating healthy foods that are good for the heart (less fat and trans fat, more fruit, vegetables, cereals, and oily fish, which has Omega-3).

A study has proven that Krill Oil reduces Bad Cholesterol

A dose of 1.0 to 1.5 grams of krill oil daily had more significant effects on LDL cholesterol and triglycerides reduction than a dose three times higher of another fish oil (3 grams a day). Higher doses of krill oil reduce triglyceride levels in the blood, which does not happen with other fish oil.

These are the results of the study:

1000mg of Krill Oil daily reduced after 90 days:

  • Total cholesterol – 13.44%
  • LDL - 32.03%
  • HDL – 43.92%
  • Triglycerides – 11:03%

A 500 mg maintenance dose of krill oil daily reduced after 180 days:

  • Total cholesterol – 18.90%
  • LDL – 44.40%
  • HDL – 33.40%
  • Triglycerides – 25.40%

Krill oil is the only natural product that can reduce the lipids in the blood with a lower amount than any other product.

Krill oil reduces the premenstrual syndrome

The first important clinical study on krill oil showed its effects on the symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome or PMS.

Krill Oil and Menstruation

The study was carried out in 2002 by researchers on the University of Montreal, McGill and other medical centers in Quebec. This was a random and double blind study on the use of krill oilto relieve the symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The results were published in the year 2003 in the “Alternative Medicine Review”, (Vol. 8, No. 2).

The clinical trial was carried out for 3 months and it concluded that (particularly patented Krill oil ingredients) it drastically reduced physical and emotional symptoms related to the PMS and painful periods, also known as dysmenorrhea.

What is the premenstrual syndrome?

Between an 85 and 97% of women suffer the pain, discomfort, and emotional swings that are directly related to the menstrual cycle every month.

The symptoms change depending on the woman and the month.

Normally, the PMS symptoms are continuous and unpleasant, from the intense craving for chocolote to a wide range of physical problems (breast pain, abdominal pain, cramps, liquid retention, swelling, weight increase, along with muscle soreness, fatigue and headaches).

Menstrual health encompasses several systems from the body, including hormone balance, the energy and mood patterns, as well as physiological symptoms. Most women experience several natural symptoms only a few days before their menstrual cycle begins. The changes in the estrogen and progesterone balance can results in mood swings, swelling, breast sensitivity, apart from a worse response to stress. Krill oil has phospholipids that are known for supporting hormone production, so they can help women to reduce the symptoms that appear during the menstrual cycle.[3]

Effects of krill oil on the PMS:

  • Reduces abdominal pain and cramps by a 33%
  • Decreases menstrual irritability by a 47%
  • Reduces depression by a 49%
  • Reduces weight gain by a 30%
  • Reduces liquid retention by a 37%
  • Reduces breast sensitivity during the PMS by a 42%
  • Relieves nausea, swelling, and fatigue
  • Relieves headaches, body and joint pain
  • Improves mood swings and cravings
  • Helps to prevent anxiety and stress during the PMS

The participants were asked to measure the seriousness of the PMS symptoms on a scale of 0 (without symptoms) to 10. Their state was assessed at the beginning, after a krill oil treatment for 45 days, and after 90 days.

The result was that the PMS symptoms were considerably reduced, from a 20% to more than a 60%.

Why does krill oil relieve PMS symptoms?

The extraordinary results of krill oil were granted to krill oil’s molecular profile, which is made of phospholipids, omega-3 fatty acids, and several antioxidant elements.

The researchers formulated a thesis that suggested that phospholipids and Omega-3 (mainly DHA and EPA) worked together to stop inflammation, which is the main cause of the most of premenstrual syndrome symptoms. Moreover, phospholipids are known by its calming effects on the brain neurotransmitters, which are notably involved in the emotional and physical symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome..

After carrying out clinical studies for three months, the authors concluded that krill oil could be “highly trusted to reduce emotional and physical symptoms associated to the PMS”.

Krill Oil and joint health

Most people consume too much omega 6 (sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil, hydrogenated vegetable oils, eggs, etc.) and very little omega-3 (oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, or tuna).

This imbalance triggers the inflammation on the cells of the body that we do not notice at first, but that will cause discomfort and damage in the long term.

The latest clinical studies have proven that inflammation is the main cause of multiple diseases: cardiovascular diseases, arthrosis, cancer, allergies, diabetes, rheumatism, high lipids levels in the blood, and nervous diseases among others.

Nutrition experts have highlighted many times how important EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil are for people, and how their scarcity can become a factor that contributes to the development of many diseases.

Omega-3 are essential polyunsaturated fats that are very important for the development of the central nervous system, they play a decisive role in coagulation, they guarantee a normal blood pressure and keep the lipids levels under control, which is essential for inflammatory processes.

Our regular diet includes too much Omega-6 and very little Omega-3, which produces an imbalance in the body. An omega-6 excess favors inflammatory reactions in the organism.

The Omega-3 from krill oil guarantees that the organism goes back to its normal state. A too low polyunsaturated fats concentration increases the risk of suffering health problems related to inflammation.

These fatty acids are not produced by the organism, rather, they must be supplied through the diet. Krill oil has a 15-1 percentage of Omega-3 and Omega-6, which means that it is capable of making up for the imbalance of the organism. In this way, it can prevent the risk of suffering inflammation, and if it has already happened, it makes it go away faster.

Scientists have shown a growing interest in the role of inflammation in the state of health or in the onset of disease; inflammation is currently one of the most studied areas in new medical research.

These studies have proven that heart attacks and strokes, for example, can be potentially associated to a increase of C reactive protein levels.

Effects on inflammation (C reactive protein CRP):

Reduction of the levels of C reactive protein in the blood with a consumption of 300 mg daily.[4]

  • After 7 days, it dropped to a 19.3%
  • After 14 days, it dropped to a 29.7%
  • After 30 days, it dropped to a 30.9%

Joint pain support

The third big series of clinical studies that were carried out focused on its ability to prevent inflammation and chronic joint pain.

During a series of carefully controlled trials, the scientists analyzed the effects of krill oil in patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a molecule that is produced by the liver as a response to an inflammatory signal. The results were quite encouraging.

Effects on joint pain just seven days after taking krill oil:
  • Pain reduction by a 24%
  • Stiffness reduction by a 22%
  • Improved Flexibility by a 16%

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is the swelling and pain caused in the joints.

Inflammation happens when the immune system wants to destroy the germs that invade infected tissues in the body.

Once the infection is stopped, the inflammation decreases and the healing process begins. However, sometimes this inflammatory process does not end and it becomes a chronic issue.

Inflammation and joint pain

The inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis happens because the immune system responds by attacking its own joint tissues due to unknown reasons. What happens next is a classic example of a basic inflammatory process.

White blood cells gather in the joints and get ready to attack, releasing inflammatory substances (interleukins and others). This results in pain, swelling, and reddening in the joints.

Most of the inflammation and pain from osteoarthritis is due to the fact that the joint cartilage literally wears out over time. This produces chronic inflammation in the affected tissues, pain, swelling, and numbness.

Reducing the inflammation is the key to relieve joint pain and the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Studies show that people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and who take Omega-3 feel less pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints, they even need less anti-inflammatory medicines.

Antioxidants have also proven to have a great ability to fight the free radicals and to provide a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Both are the two main components of krill oil.

Krill Oil and cardiovascular health

As it happens with oil fish, the lipid profile offers support for cardiovascular health. Lately, this aspect is being taken into consideration, and many diets now include essential fatty acids sources, either from food or supplementation. EPA and DHA polyunsaturated fatty acids are in charge of cholesterol balance, leading the markers towards healthy levels.[1]

Krill Oil and Cardiovascular Health

The scientists became aware of the benefits of fish oils when they discovered the low rate of cardiovascular diseases in Eskimos from Greenland, despite their fatty diets.

According to researchers, the reason for this lies on the high amount of Omega-3 that are found in fish, which is the basic food in the daily diet of an Eskimo.

Later studies confirmed this theory, as well as the ability of Omega-3 oil to reduce the amount of LDL lipoproteins, triglycerides, and to increase HDL (good cholesterol).

Therefore, Omega-3 prevents inflammation in the arteries, which is a factor that contributes to the formation of plaque or the hardening of the arteries.

Why is krill oil good for the heart?

Researchers have concluded that the beneficial effects of krill oil are due to its unique molecular structure.

Krill oil is rich in phospholipids and antioxidants (specially astaxanthin), which explains its amazing effects to regulate cholesterol and other lipids in the blood.

The researchers have reached the conclusion that it has an extraordinary combination of useful substances with “superior effects” to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Improves the aspect of the skin

Krill Oil improves the skin

Due to its powerful antioxidant elements, krill protects the skin from the damage and inflammation caused by UV rays. For the first time in history, we can take a capsule to protect ourselves from the sun.

On the other hand, a 58% of women who answered a survey on quality of life stated that krill oil had reduced their wrinkles and other skin problems, like reddening for example.

One of the participants wrote: “My skin is less dry and smoother, and I have less scalp.”

In fact, the effect of krill oil on eczemas and psoriasis is currently being studied.

Astaxanthin protects the cells from the oxidation processes, from the simplest cell damage to the most complex ones, like carcinogenesis.

It also improves the aspect of the hair and nails. Women who participated in the survey confirmed that they had a shinier hair, reduced hair loss, and stronger nails. These positive effects are due to the omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) found in krill oil.

Krill Oil increases the energy

In the survey about quality of life, 51% of the participants claimed that they have experienced more energy and less drowsiness while taking this oil.

A Canadian student wrote:

“Before, I felt empty and lacked energy, now I live my life at an incredible speed. Thanks to krill oil my mental fatigue has decreased and I feel that my mental acuity has considerably increased.”

Sportspeople have also experienced a greater performance and resistance when using krill oil. Researchers believe that this is due to its high choline content (a key component of a chemical substance from the brain, acetylcholine) along with Omega-3. Sportspeople said that they can train faster and that they get a better performance.

Increases concentration and focus

In studies with dyslexic children, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or autism, the parents noticed a remarkable improvement in the concentration and focus of their children after taking krill oil.

Krill Oil and Concentration

Once again, these incredible results are due to Omega-3 (particuarly DHA, in the form of phospholipids, an important constituent of the brain). People have stated that they no longer need a nap and that they can concentrate on highly complex mental situations.

A normal cognitive function is supported by phospholipids that can be found in krill. They will enhance several abilities, like memory, focus, and mental acuity, apart from improving the behavior, increasing their state of mind and mood. The brain matter is made up around a 60% of DHA, which is why it its such an important piece in the structure and function of the brain.[5]

Helps with hay fever

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, krill oil reduces the symptoms of rhinitis, wheezing, runny nose, and eye pain, which are related to the immune system response to pollen and other microscopic allergen.

Reduces autoimmune diseases

A study of the “American College of Nutrition” journal, from December 2002, informed that omega-3 fatty acids from oil fish can provide significant improvements in patients suffering from inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

There are several new trials being currently carried out to determine the effects of krill oil on rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease and lupus.

Recent studies are focused on the benefits of krill oil for prostate and breast cancer, since both have shown a positive response to krill oil, which proves that it is also a hormone regulator.

Who can benefit from krill oil:

  • Anyone who wants to feel active and healthy
  • Anyone who wants to protect their cells
  • Women with menstrual pain
  • Those with high cholesterol levels

What foods have krill oil?

There are many fish that are rich in Omega-3, such as mackerel, salmon, and tuna. However, krill oil is much healthier and beneficial for the human body, it is only found in krill crustaceans that live in the Antarctic ocean.

Omega 3 Softgels

Krill oil vs Omega-3 fatty acids from fish

  • The absorption is much better than that of fish oil. The binding of phospholipids increases the omega-3 bioavailability, it improves the relation between omega-3 and omega-6, and it supports a proper functioning of the cell membrane.
  • It offers an excellent antioxidant protection. Krill oil is rich in astaxanthin and flavonoids that can protect from the free radicals.
  • It is contaminant-free. Krill is found at the bottom of the food chain, and it absorbs less pollution from the crystalline waters of the seas that surround the Antarctica. So you do not have to worry about dangerous accumulations of mercury, PCB, heavy metals, and other toxins.
  • It is a renewable source. Krill is a highly renewable source. It is the biggest biomass in the ocean and there is no risk of causing an over-exploitation. Krill is a renewable, sustainable, and environmentally positive food source. The ice, and the low temperatures of the Southern Pole, allow krill to grow in an environment with less pretadors than other species from warm waters.
  • Stability. Pure krill oil is more stable and resistant to rancidity than conventional fish oils. This mean that it will last longer, around two years at ambient temperature.
  • It does not produce a fish aftertaste nor reflux. Normally, fish oil produces reflux, and an aftertaste of the fish flavor. These side effects do not happen with pure antarctic krill oil.
