Lutein is a powerful antioxidant, it helps protect our body from free radical attacks. This antioxidant effect provides several therapeutic purposes:
- Eyesight: the outer part of the retina is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Lutein fights free radicals attacking such fatty acids. Furthermore, the retina is like a light filter, protecting eyesight from harmful sunlight. Eating the recommended daily amount of Lutein prevents diseases such as colour blindness.
- Skin: Lutein protects the skin from solar radiation and prevents premature ageing.
- Cancer: Lutein is one of the strongest carotenoids which makes it an important nutrient that prevents tumour and carcinogenic processes (although this also depends on many other factors), as it enhances the immune system and cell communication.
