Red Yeast Rice by Now Foods is a product based on red yeast rice obtained from a yeast (Monascus purpureus) that grows on this cereal. Rice fermented this way has been a key element of the diet in Asian countries for centuries.
In China, use of this red yeast was documented for the first time in the Tang dynasty, 800 years before Christ. Currently, we know that red yeast rice contains fourteen active compounds called monacolins, which help to inhibit the hepatic synthesis of cholesterol. One of them, monacolin K, is in effect a powerful inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, also known as lovastatin.
Red yeast rice prevents cholesterol from attaching to the interior part of the blood vessels, which often results in obstruction, leading to apoplexy or heart attack.
