Studies carried out on hepatic intoxication through carbon tetrachloride and through the toxic mushroom Amanita, showed that SILYMARIN serves to prevent liver necrosis and even death, when the dosage is very high, it is administered intravenously. Silymarin, is an active principle of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), belonging to the family of bioflavonoids.It acts, amongst other things, as an antioxidant, detoxifier, hepatic cell regenerator and protector.
It is beneficial in a multitude of situations, amongst them:
- Intoxications from alcohol, mushrooms, pesticides and drugs, amongst others.
- Hepatic problems.
- Chronic inflammation of the liver.
Silymarin has antioxidant, protective, detoxifying and hepatic cell regeneration properties. We can say that one of the principal functions of our liver is to filter hydrosoluble toxins present in the blood, altering them to ensure they are eliminated from our body. When these toxins are not hydrosoluble, such as the case of toxins from alcohol, poisonous mushrooms, drugs, insecticides, pesticides, amongst other, the liver stores them and through the action of specific enzymes degrades them.
This process leads to lipid peroxidation, destruction of hepatic cell membranes, and the reduction of glutathione, one of the most important hepatic protectors. Recent studies conclude that Silymarin prevents lipid peroxidation, preventing the destruction of hepatic cell membranes and accelerating the regeneration of these same cells by increasing protein synthesis. It was verified that it also produces an increase in glutathione, which provokes a consequent reduction of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, substances that participate in the inflammatory process resulting from the release of free radicals.
This liver protecting action makes Silymarin an ingredient much used in hepatitis, cirrhosis, chronic inflammation of the liver, hepatic detoxifications, amongst others. SILYMARIN also acts at the level of the pancreas, kidneys, red blood cells, protecting them from the toxic effects of alcohol.
