Silymarin: Milk Thistle Extract
Studies on liver poisoning and carbon tetrachloride by toxic Amanita mushroom, proved that silymarin prevents liver necrosis and even death, when given very high doses, by intra-venous route.
Silymarin, it is the active ingredient of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), that belongs to the family of bioflavonoids. It acts as an antioxidant, detoxifier, protector and regenerating liver cells.
Its action is beneficial in the following situations:
- Alcohol poisoning, mushrooms, pesticides and drugs among others.
- Chronic and acute hepatitis.
- Chronic liver inflammation.
Silymarin has antioxidant, protective, detoxifying and regeneration of liver cells properties. One of the main functions of our liver is to filter the water soluble toxins in the blood, altering them so that they are removed from our body. When these toxins are water insoluble, such as toxins from alcohol, poisonous mushrooms, drugs, insecticides, pesticides, among others, and stores the liver by the action of specific enzymes degrades. This process leads to lipid peroxidation, destruction of liver cell membranes, and reduced glutathione, one of the most important hepatic protectors.
Recent studies concluded that supplementation with Silymarin warned lipid peroxidation, membrane preventing destruction of liver cells, and accelerating the regeneration of the same cells, by increasing protein synthesis.
